The Lockdown Was Lifted After The Pony Was Blown Up

Let’s look at that title for a moment and try to parse it in our pointed little heads, please.

What we have here, is an empty cul-de-sac near a park and a school. Some child evidently was playing with their “Hasbro FurReal Friends Butterscotch Pony” (please note, this pony lists for 299.99 retail – not a cheap toy) and forgot to bring it in with him/her when called back into school. Some person with an over-active imagination, contacts the authorities and starts a bomb scare.

So they lock down the school and surrounding neighborhoods, and the local bomb squad comes out, investigates the “pony” at least with a robot, and when they can’t find anything dangerous, decides to blow up the toy anyway, “just to be sure”. Keep in mind, this is not a small toy, the website lists the maximum weight limit for this toy as 80 pounds (around 36 kilograms).

Here is video of the news report.

Why do I suddenly have a vision of Grand Moff Tarkin saying “Fear will keep the local systems in line, fear of suspicious toy ponies.”

I’m sorry but with this level of overreaction, bin Laden must be laughing in his grave/cave. Between the Security Theatre and Fear Based Overreaction, the terrorists have won.

Remember! War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength!

Well, well, well. I think that Steve Jobs may have just put his foot in it this time. Looking at the vaunted “Section 3.3.1” of the new 4.0 version of the iPhone/iPod/iPad OS, you have this clause.

Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited).

In trying to defend the new very, very restrictive platform T&C changes, Apple is banning anything that uses a scripting language, a 3rd party framework, or a 3rd party toolkit in development.

Steve then weighed in on the issue over the weekend. Jobs referenced John Gruber’s rationale for the changes. He then, if the e-mails are authentic, clarified Apple’s position, claiming that intermediate layers between developers and the platform have two results: they result in “sub-standard apps” and they hinder the “progress of the platform.”

So, according to Jobs, the problem is, that these things result in “sub-standard apps” – well, that is amusing when one of the apps he demoed on the iPad, Tap Tap Revenge – is now banned by the new T&C because it uses internal scripting and a 3rd party framework in its development.

So the app is good enough for The Steve to use to demo his new “magical” application, but is not high enough quality for people to be able to get in the app store.

Texas Attorney General Intervenes After Judge Orally Grants Gay Divorce

From the Austin American-Statesman

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has intervened in Texas’ unprecedented gay divorce case after the judge orally granted the divorce to the lesbian couple involved.

“Last week, at the close of a two-day hearing before state District Judge Scott Jenkins on how they should divide their property and share custody of their son, the two reached an agreement that in part called for them to divorce. According to Naylor’s lawyer, Jennifer Cochran, Jenkins granted the divorce orally and ordered the parties to put their agreement in writing and return to court next month for his signature. ‘This is the first time in over a year that our family has been at peace,’ said Naylor, who still lives in Austin. Daly has moved to San Antonio with their son. ‘We never asked them to grant us a same-sex marriage. We only asked them to legally recognize that we needed a divorce,’ Naylor said.”

Said Abbott spokesman Jerry Strickland in a statement: “The State maintains that the Court has no legal authority to grant this divorce, and as a result, the State must intervene in this case to defend the Texas Constitution.”

Can someone please drop a house on this man?
